How To Prepare Your AC For Summer

With spring and summer approaching in the coming months, it’s time to make sure your AC is up to the task of fighting off the blazing Texas heat. If it is not able to operate at its best, you can end up paying for higher energy usage and significant repairs later on. There are a number of ways you can ensure your AC is ready for the summer months, many of which you can do on your own.

  • Clean everything: Clearing dust and debris from your unit, ducts, registers, and filter are all vital to allowing it to operate efficiently once summer hits. The outdoor condenser will be in special need of cleaning since leaves, twigs, and even small animals can get into its various nooks and crannies. Clearing debris from the top, the fan, and the coils is especially important. If the unit has a replaceable filter, install a new one monthly.
  • Check coolant lines and other parts: The refrigerant lines running from your house to the outdoor condenser should be intact and well insulated. If the insulation is frayed, replace it. If the pipe is damaged in any way, get a technician to service it immediately. It is also worthwhile to check the fan belt to see if it needs replacement.
  • Test the thermostat: Once you’ve cleaned everything up and checked the unit for any visible issues, it’s time to turn on the thermostat to “cool.” Run it for a bit. If you hear strange noises or aren’t getting cool air, your unit needs repairs. If nothing happens at all, there may be an issue with the thermostat itself, such as dead batteries or poor calibration.
  • Schedule a seasonal maintenance visit: Some air conditioning issues can’t be handled without extensive training in AC repair and maintenance. Calling a technician to examine and clean your unit goes a long way toward getting your unit ready for the summer by ensuring it is able to operate at peak efficiency.

Routine maintenance is a small investment that prevents large repair expenses and energy bills in the long run. In addition, it safeguards the warranty and extends the life of the unit. Climate Tech Air Conditioning & Heating provides routine HVAC maintenance through the ClimateCare program which provides for two cleaning/maintenance visits each year.
